researcher, and educator. Their practice engages in art, education and collaboration as ways to forge creative survival. They’re interested in the complexity of collectivity and in the possibility of establishing a solidarity that does not homogenise, but affirms difference. They make performances, installations, texts, group works, collaborative formats, and scores that aim to unpack the problem of relating. They see performance as a way to become receptive to one’s own alterity when relating to others, offering the possibility to have embodied experiences that one does not identify with. Joseph is currently engaged in a PhD research at the Zürich University of the Arts and Mozarteum in Salzburg that investigates the political currency of incoherence and performative strategies of ambiguity, illegibility, and non-performance, asking what aspects of performance might angle towards liberatory or non-sovereign politics and possibly negotiate or abolish the constraints one is born into.&nbsp; Joseph’s practice is closely linked to their work as an educator, which is influenced by experimental and radical pedagogies and non-hierarchical collaborative methods. They are a founding member of Rotterdam-based research group SOHERE; a community of practitioners working in the fields of art, design and science who develop collaborative, horizontal learning environments. From 2019-2022 they co-ran Zurich based School of Commons; a grassroots initiative dedicated to the study and development of decentered knowledge, with a focus on practices of peer learning and commoning. Encompassing a broad range of educational activities, I have taught in both academic and non-academic environments, and worked together with children, students, scientists, artists, performers, and others. I am especially dedicated to creating safer, more inclusive, and more accessible environments for learning. I have hosted performance workshops, designed environments and frameworks for collective learning and community building, and offered training in gender inclusivity. I often work with movement practices and body-based exercises, as well as scores, writing exercises, games, and collaborative processes. In Lauren Berlant’s text, Structures of Unfeeling: Mysterious Skin, Berlant reflects upon the relationship between trauma and underperforming, framing unfeeling as a plausible response to sexual violence, especially in the context of a society that is unlikely to acknowledge the assault or pursue the perpetrator(s). Unfeeling here is not only a response to the violent event itself, but also a way to cope with a world that does not offer support, recognition, or repair in order to deal with that event. More broadly, Berlant coined the term “politicized dissociation”: “…which describes the subject’s exit from prescribed ways to feel about the world, while not knowing how to feel otherwise, yet. This cannot be treated as an individual disorder but has to be acknowledged as a consequence of capitalism and the material affective necessities which are part of life in a wrong world.” Following unfeeling as an aesthetic language to engage with experiences of sexualised violence,&nbsp;prologue [structures of unfeeling] proposes reticent or recessive performative modes as a means to stage crisis, effective precisely in their illegible or inevident forms. The installation forecloses a coherent relation between reality and the affective response to reality, thereby offering instead the unexpected spaciousness of affective disengagement. Through the use of colour-negating light from sodium vapour lamps, an extension of the space through a mirrored floor, aluminium sculptures engraved with victim-survivor accounts that have been revised to their grammatical denominations, and accompanied by a sound installation, the work attempts to create a space of “flat affect”; a space in which affective incoherence, lowered intensity, and a decrease of legibility aims to offer escape routes from normative ways to feel about the world.This work is the prologue to the upcoming exhibition and events programme titled Structures of Unfeeling, which will take place in BINZ39 and Tanzhaus in October 2024. Initiated by SOHERE (Joseph Baan, wolf engelen, and Vanessa Jane Phaff),&nbsp;Structures of Unfeeling is a performative learning environment that intends to use the exhibition format for the formation of a public culture around sexual trauma. Social and state grammars generally aim to categorise, organise, and quantify individuals in ways that makes them appear on its grid, at which point individuals are forced or coerced to operate by its logics . To appear as illegible, unrecognisable, or incoherent signals a refusal of and potential escape from these grammars and their logics. liberatory potential of performative practices and propose performance as a means to—individually and collectively—interrogate and negotiate the constraints that one is borne into.&nbsp;Departing from the prism of “becoming unrecognisable” as a methodology (or what Marquis Bey calls “(un)gendering”), Bl0Wn considers how becoming unrecognisable might offer the possibility of liberation from identitarian markers. By harnessing unrecognizability, illegibility, and incoherence as strategies to question and potentially abolish the constraints one is borne into (i.e. social &amp; economic mobility, categories of citizenship &amp; identity), the piece aims to interrogate and negotiate the limits of our given realities. The work directs the gaze of the audience by agentively choosing what to reveal and what to hide; through light and darkness, sound and noise, forms and textures, as well as performativity and the refusal to perform. Bl0Wn invites the unruliness of the body as a space for change; the performers change shape and affect throughout the work, attempting to undermine the constraints of identity and to play with the Joseph https://josephbaan.com/Fugue-State 2022 FUGUE STATE “Part of the reason I think that queer theory and love theory are related to each other as political idioms, is that queer theory presumes the affective incoherence of the subject with respect to the objects that anchor it or to which they’re attached. One thing that is very powerful for me to try and think about is how we could have a political pedagogy that deals with incoherence. Where the taking up of a position won’t be so that an individual can be coherent, intentional, agentive, and encounter themselves through their object, but that there would be a way that situational clarity can be produced without negating the incoherence of the subject. Training in one’s own incoherence, training in the ways in which one’s complexity and contradiction can never be resolved by the political, is a really important part of a political theory of non-sovereignty.” Fugue State researches what a practice of ‘training one’s own incoherence’ could look like, and what the political currency of incoherence and illegibility within a performance practice could be. Based on Lauren Berlant’s suggestion to “train one’s own incoherence”[1], this work investigates&nbsp;incoherence as a method to be harnessed in order to foster political non-sovereignty. The following images were taken during rehearsals by Nils Amadeus Lange and are part of a work-in-progress for a piece that will premiere in 2025, co-produced by Tanzhaus, Zurich.
